Have you often wondered what it’s like to work at a museum?
Now is your opportunity to spend a few hours a week helping staff and other volunteers preserve Haverhill’s history. Museum volunteers help research and document collections, organize collections storage, and help with all museum functions, education programs, special events and publicity.
Volunteer Opportunities
Newsletter Editor – one person, 1-3 hours per month
- As the editor of the Museum’s quarterly newsletter you will develop articles and keep members current with the workings at the Museum
- Generate weekly press releases
Curatorial – two to six people, 4-6 hours per week
- Cleaning artifacts in tour rooms of the Duncan house
- Inventory and catalog the collection
- Re-label and index, photograph, re-house and prepare
safe storage areas for artifacts
- Clean, organize and catalog the framed art collection
Exhibitions – two people, 2-4 hours per week
- Develop series of inexpensive, temporary exhibits
- Produce simple traveling exhibits to visit schools, senior centers, etc.
- Create new interpretation of period rooms and museum space
Programs – one to three people, 2-4 hours per week
- Develop a lecture series for the public
- Develop training workshops geared to educate the public about caring for their own collections
- Develop programs for local access cable station highlighting the Museum and its collections
- Develop new walking tours
- Develop an ongoing oral history project
- Develop public relations plan
- Design market research program about partnerships in the community
Research – two to three people, 2-4 hours per week
- Refresh the Buttonwoods tour information
- Create a new Museum brochure
- Research programs for the Society’s meetings
- Research a specific area of interest of the collection such as the clocks and timepieces, the doll collection or the Native American Indian artifacts
- Research and produce articles for the Museum’s newsletter
- Research inquiries for genealogy, artifact information and historic house records
- Research public opinion of the Museum and how to be involved with the community
- Research grant opportunities
Administration – one to two people, 1-3 hours per week
- Prepare current collections data for conversion to museum software program
- Maintain collection records
